Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin (Review)

Placed in a world where Hitler and the Axis won World War Two, Wolf by Wolf takes on a new twist on WW2 and the results of the war. It begs to ask the question: what would have happened if the war was lost? In this intense and dangerous world, a young Jewish girl survives and escapes the concentration camps. Years later, she is racing across Europe and Asia to kill Hitler and save the world.
When I read the concept for this book, I was very skeptical. Something about the concept struck me as iffy. Needless to say, I was happily surprised to find out that Wolf by Wolf was actually quite amazing written and a very deep read. It took me on an emotional ride and had me on the edge of my seat from the introduction to the very last word. It had me cheering on the deep and complex characters and looking at life and the second world war from new angles. I can't stress how much complexity there is in Wolf by Wolf. The sheer emotional depth of the story grabbed my gut, and the ties to real world events made it just that much more real and painful. Wolf by Wolf was an perfectly balanced story that did not seem to linger on non-important facts and moments. I am in love with the character voice and the methods of story telling used in this novel. Each moment of the novel felt potent.
As you can probably tell, I loved Wolf by Wolf and recommend you read it when you get the chance. Without a doubt I give Wolf by Wolf the rating of FIVE OUT OF FIVE STARS!

Unspoken (Shadow Falls: After Dark #3) by C.C. Hunter (Review)

The third and final installment of the Shadow Falls: After Dark, Unspoken wraps up the tense drama filled story of Della the vampire and her friends at Shadow Falls Camp. Confronted with her aunts murder, her fathers hatred, her uncles disappearance and the lies of her love interest, Chase, Della struggles to do the right thing and get proper justice. Her choices are hard and dangerous, but she will not be stopped.
I love C.C. Hunters novels, and Unspoken doesn't seem to be much of an exception. It's plot and character development held my interest and kept me a happy reader. Della is strong, independent and vulnerable all at the same time. She is a diverse and rounded character that grows and learns as the story progresses, and I very much loved reader about her. Unspoken was riddled with action, mystery and romance. It's a count down to save Della's father and get the guilty murder in jail where he belongs.
The romances in the Shadow Falls: After Dark are intense and interesting, but luckily are not the complete focus of the book. Chase, the romantic male lead, is handsome, smart, witty, and loyal. I loved reading all about him and found myself cheering him on continuously throughout the story. He added a vital dynamic to the story that tipped the scales from it being a good book, to a great book. I loved the Shadow Falls: After Dark series, along with Unspoken, and definitely recommend both them. I give Unspoken the rating of FOUR AND A HALF STARS OUT OF FIVE!

Getting to Know the Authors: Featuring Lisa Gail Green!

Bio:
Lisa Gail Green lives with her husband the rocket scientist and their three junior mad scientists in Southern California. She writes books so she can have an excuse to live in the fantasy world in her head. She likes to share these with readers so she's represented by the lovely Melissa Nasson of Rubin Pfeffer Content. She has a parrot but would most definitely get a werewolf for a pet if she weren't allergic.
Lisa loves YA. She believes with all her heart that teen readers are ready and willing to experience things that some adults have closed their minds to, that books are the safest way to explore, learn, and escape, and that imagination is the key to just about everything.

What has she written?
She has written:
Soul Crossed (Of Demons and Angels #1), Soul Corrupted (Of Demons and Angels, #2), Soul Conquered (Of Demons and Angels, #3), The Binding Stone (Djinn, #1), Journeys of Wonder: An Anthology of Genre Fiction, Volume 1, Playthings of the Gods, Journeys of Wonder, Volume 2 (Volume 2), Gods of Justice, Journeys of Wonder, Volume 3 and Journeys of Wonder, Volume 1.

Now on to the Interview!!
1) How old were you when you started writing, in your opinion?
I’ve been writing since I was seven! I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but kept thinking, after that… Then one day I decided to do it for real. So I sat down and treated it like a business and full time job. That was about six years ago. It’s a slow business, but if you have to write, then you do it no matter what! I can’t imagine NOT writing. My life wasn’t complete until I did it and it wouldn’t be if I stopped. :D I just hope readers enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it.

2) What do you want a reader to gain from reading your works?
I want the reader to be completely immersed in my world, believing that my characters are real. I want it to be a wonderful escape (which is why I read) and in the case of this specific series, I want the reader to really think about good and evil and the nuances that make it so hard to truly judge sometimes.
Also that Josh is hot.

3) What are your three top suggestions on becoming an author, or being a pleasure writer?
1. If writing is a burning need inside of you, don’t let anyone stop you.
2. Perseverance is the key. You can never do it if you stop trying.
3. READ and WRITE. Learn as much as you can and those are the top two ways to do it. Writers read. Period.

4) What is your favourite novel, why?
It’s so hard to choose! I love HP of course. I know you hear that a lot, but there’s a reason! :D I love sooooo many good books. Recentish YA ones that are my faves include COMPULSION and BONE GAP.

5) Who is your favourite author, why?
Libba Bray. I will always, hands down, say she is my hero. I envy her mind and love her sense of humor. BEAUTY QUEENS and GOING BOVINE would be listed above, but I get to spotlight them here. Brilliant.

6) What are your favorite pass times besides writing?
Reading. Spending time with my kids. Though, to be fair I’m usually searching for writing time and trying to escape them, but if it were the other way around… LOL I also used to act. Now I get into character when I write.

7) Who in your life do you credit your imagination to the most?
Great question!! I want to hug it because it really made me think! I’d say both my mom and dad. My mom because she’s the librarian/teacher who taught me the magic of books - and what better road to imagination is there?? My dad because he’s always shared his silly sense of humor and his love of theater with my brother and I. I’m pretty sure I got that from him.

8) What are the top five things on your bucket list?
Oooh. That’s tough. I may cheat in that I’ve realized a couple of these, but let’s see… 1. Seeing a wild zebra (which I checked off this summer by Hearst Castle). 2. Scuba diving 3. Meeting J.K. Rowling 4. Having an event at which I am the “author” (done this summer, but I’m not opposed to more)! and 5. Spending the night in an actual haunted castle with other writers (because who can spend the night alone in a haunted castle?)

9) What is your funniest childhood memory?
Funny for you or me? Because I remember following my brother around and not noticing when he closed the screen door to the back porch behind him then falling flat on my face through it. So that was probably pretty funny from the outside! Also I went to the bank with my dad once and this guy brought a monkey with him (it wore a diaper). He went into the back, I guess for a safety deposit box or something and told the monkey to behave. It didn’t. I was in hysterics and so was my dad (remember I mentioned his sense of humor above). When the guy came out the monkey acted like nothing had happened. But it had climbed all over the bank and onto some strangers who didn’t know what to do. Great memory.

10) To the youth of today, if you could tell them one thing, what would it be?
Be the best you possible. Don’t give up because of what someone else says. Believe in that little voice inside and try to do what you’ve always wanted. Because if you work hard enough it IS possible and by doing that, you’ll be happy and make others happy too. YOU can make a difference in this world. Don’t get jaded.

Angel Dares (Benedicts #5) by Joss Stirling (Review)

The fifth installment of the Benedicts series, Angel Dares take the readers on a romantic adventure of soulmates. Angel is a musician with the band Seventh Edition, a violinist to be exact. Her spunky personality is constantly getting her in trouble, but that doesn't stop her from trying to help one of the Benedict brothers find thier soul-mate, or soulfinder as they call them in the world of Savants. Savants are people with special abilities, like telekinesis, water-bending and detecting lies.
Each book that has written by Joss Stirling in the past has been superb, therefore I am not surprised that I fell in love with Angel Dares. It's voice and characters held my attention captive, leaving me unable to put the book down. Each character and each moment was developed, unique and emotionally charged. I found it interesting how the soul-finder situation went down for Angel. (Don't worry, no spoilers) I found that I didn't really like the romantic lead, but at the same time loved him as a character. In Angel Dares each character is unique and rounded for a better reading experience. The plot of the novel was not the deepest, but was still riveting and had me wanting more.
I most definitely recommend Angel Dares and the Benedicts series, and give Angel Dares the rating of FIVE STARS OUT OF FIVE!

Now on to the Interview!
1) How old were you when you started writing?
I've been writing for a long time. My grandma kept a little book I wrote when I was 8 or 9, with the pages folded so you could read it like an actual book. I illustrated it too! Of course it's not very good, but I've always loved books and stories. I seriously began writing back in 2000 - so about fifteen years ago.

2) What do you want a reader to gain from reading your works?
First and foremost, I just want them to get lost in a story. And to meet characters that like hanging out with for a little while. And maybe to realize that if my characters can get through tough stuff and come out the other side okay, they can too.

3) What are your three top suggestions on becoming an author, or being a pleasure writer?
Read a lot. Write a lot. And write for the joy of it first and foremost, not because you hope to be rich or famous or any of that. If you don't love the act of creating, it's a very, very hard business to be a part of.

4) What is your favourite novel, why?
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee. It is a story that sticks with you for a long, long time - those characters are just so very memorable.

5) What are your favorite past times besides writing?
Reading, of course, baking, walking the dog, watching great TV shows and movies (story is story, after all), and traveling when I get the chance.

6) Who in your life do you credit your imagination to the most?
Lots of reading when I was younger, I think.

7) What are the top five things on your bucket list?
I'd love to travel to France, Italy and Greece, so that's three right there. Besides that, I guess get asked to participate in some of the big book festivals like Y'all Fest and meet one of my favorite authors, Jojo Moyes.

8) What is your funniest childhood memory?
I was camping and a bluejay swooped down and grabbed my pacifier off the table and flew away with it. I cried. It wasn't funny at the time, but I think it's funny now.

9) To the youth of today, if you could tell them one thing, what would it be?
Don't get so caught up on stuff online that you forget there's a great big world out there that needs you. So go out and do great things!

and Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/FarahOomerbhoy/

What has she written?
She has written:
The Last of the Firedrakes (The Avalonia Chronicles, #1) by Farah Oomerbhoy

 Synopsis:
16-year-old Aurora Darlington is an orphan. Mistreated by her adopted family and bullied at school, she dreams of running away and being free. But when she is kidnapped and dragged through a portal into a magical world, suddenly her old life doesn’t seem so bad.
Avalonia is a dangerous land ruled by powerful mages and a cruel, selfish queen who will do anything to control all seven kingdoms—including killing anyone who stands in her way. Thrust headlong into this new, magical world, Aurora’s arrival sets plans in motion that threaten to destroy all she holds dear.
With the help of a young fae, a magical pegasus, and a handsome mage, Aurora journeys across Avalonia to learn the truth about her past and unleash the power within herself. Kingdoms collide as a complicated web of political intrigue and ancient magic lead Aurora to unravel a shocking secret that will change her life forever.

Now on to the Interview!
1) How old were you when you started writing?
I must have been in the sixth grade when I started writing poems. They were really quite bad  I then tried writing fiction, but I would never finish anything because of schoolwork. It was only after I finished my Master’s that I started creating Avalonia, and finished my first book.

2) What do you want a reader to gain from reading your works?
My main aim is to tell a good story. To make the reader feel involved in the world and identify with the characters. At the same time I want my readers to feel like something about the story helps them to deal with other difficult situations in life.
Nothing is impossible, and it is ultimately your choices in life, strength of character, and courage in the face of adversity, that will determine who you truly are. I think Uncle Gabriel expresses this very well in the book, when he tells Aurora: “When difficulties come, we must see them as what they are—opportunities and a new path to discover your potential. How will you ever know the magnitude of courage that you are capable of, if you have never experienced the hopelessness of fear?”

3) What are your three top suggestions on becoming an author, or being a pleasure writer?
Keep writing, even if it’s only a paragraph a day. It’s exercise for your brain.
Keep a journal or notepad handy at all times. Sometimes ideas come to you and if you don’t write them down they can disappear.
Pay attention to grammar rules. Even if you are going to have your story edited, it’s important to structure your sentences correctly so your ideas are as clear as possible.

4) What is your favorite novel, why?
I would have to say The Magic Faraway Tree series by Enid Blyton, and The Chronicles of Narnia series are my favorites. As they are the first two fantasy series I read as a child, and were both instrumental in starting my love for creating magical worlds.

5) Who is your favorite author, why?
C. S. Lewis is my favorite. The world of Narnia is such a wonderful creation. What is so amazing about Narnia is that it is so complex in its simplicity. There are many layers to the story of Narnia, complex issues and ideas that lay beneath the surface if you know where to look.

6) What are your favorite pass times besides writing?
Haha :) That would be reading!

7) Who in your life do you credit your imagination to the most?
I would have to say my husband. He has a great sense of humor and sometimes says the most outrageous things, which gets me thinking; what if?

8) What are the top five things on your bucket list?
See the Seven Wonders of the World. (So far I’ve seen four.)
Ride in a hot air balloon.
Go night diving.
Learn to ski.
Go back to college and earn a PHD.

9) What is your funniest childhood memory?
Listening to my father telling my brother and me stories about his childhood.

10) To the youth of today, if you could tell them one thing, what would it be?
Listen to your parents; they have been through this before. Chances are they have a pretty good idea what they are talking about.

Now on to the Interview!
1) How old were you when you started writing, in your opinion?
It was high school, really, though I didn't start writing with the intent to publish until 2007.

2) What do you want a reader to gain from reading your works?
I write for entertainment. I just want people to be able to open my book, and be transported.

3) What are your three top suggestions on becoming an author, or being a pleasure writer?
Being an author is hard. If you can imagine doing anything else and being really happy, then do that. But if not, then you are a writer. My best tips are, finish your story before you edit, be open to criticism, and never let the criticism get you down.

4) What is your favourite novel, why?
That's too tough. My favorite is always what I'm reading at the moment, so it changes all the time.

5) Who is your favourite author, why?
Same. I think I have many wonderful author friends. Picking one would be impossible.

6) What are your favorite pass times besides writing?
I love traveling. That's my big one.

7) Who in your life do you credit your imagination to the most?
My dad. I have a very dry, sarcastic sense of humor. that came from him.

8) What are the top five things on your bucket list?
Travel to Greece and Russia, Buy groceries for a stranger, Hit the NYT or USA Today Bestsellers list, Have a meal with my friends from High School, Leave the world a little better than I found it.

9) What is your funniest childhood memory?
Wow, nothing actually comes to mind. Which is not to say that I didn't have a fun childhood, but yeah, I've got nothing.

10) To the youth of today, if you could tell them one thing, what would it be?
It gets better.

Here is a special sneak peak of her novel Playing With Fire that will be coming out October 27th 2015:

I get my schedule and map and head off to first period. I find the correct door, do a quick double check of my schedule and stuff the paper into my back pocket, opening the door as quietly as possible. Instantly all eyes swing my direction. Walking in, trying my best to look more comfortable than I feel, I hand my note to the teacher, Mr. Walker.
“Class, we have a new student,” he announces as my stomach sinks into my shoes. Of course he’s going to be one of those teachers who makes a big deal about it. I shift my backpack onto my other shoulder and struggle to keep my chin up as he announces me. Best not to show any weakness. Teenagers, like sharks, can smell blood in the water.
"This is Farris Barnett. I trust you will all make her feel welcome."  There are a few mutterings from the back, but I can’t make anything out. He makes a note on a clipboard on his desk and waves his hand in my direction.
"Why don’t you tell us a little about yourself, Farris?" he says absently, lowering himself into his creaking chair.
I glance to my right, at the open windows. Maybe I can make a break for it. A fall from a second-story window couldn’t possibly be more painful than this, I reason. But I’d probably end up in one of those full-body casts and be tortured by an unreachable itch for three weeks. The teacher clears his throat impatiently. Ah, the hell with it.
“Right. I’m Farris. I spend my spare time trying to calculate the air speed velocity of the European swallow. My life’s ambition is to develop some sort of freeze ray, and I’m a firm believer that at some point, the world will be taken over by zombies.”
Chirp, chirp, chirp. Either no one gets it, which wouldn’t surprise me, or no one cares, which also wouldn’t surprise me. To my left someone snickers, but I’m too busy glancing longingly at the windows to notice who it is.
Traction is looking pretty good right now.
“Yes, well, welcome to Cherry Point High. Please take a seat in the back there." The teacher points to an empty desk in the farthest row before launching into a forty-five-minute lecture on the infrastructure of post-Julius Caesar Rome. At some point I stop taking notes on my tablet and just allow myself to zone out, scrolling through the local news instead. When the bell finally rings I practically leap from my seat, gather my crap, and headed for my next class.

I barely turn the first corner before I see it. Three tall boys, two of them in matching football jerseys and one in a black t-shirt have another boy backed up against the lockers. They are exchanging heated words when one of them reaches out, slapping the book from the one boy’s hand. The hallway is filled with people, but no one is even looking at them. It’s a genuine handicap, I realize. People are so willing to be blind when something like that is happening. Too often I’d been in his shoes, tormented by others as people around me just ignored us like we were invisible. Maybe that’s why I snap. Or maybe I’m just too, how did my dad put it? Abrasive.
Either way, I move in quickly, catching the tail end of the taunting.
“Why are you even here?” the tallest boy demands. “Nobody wants you here.”
I pipe up. “Hey, leave him alone.”
The three boys turn, looking at me like I’ve just dome some kind of magic trick like pulling a rabbit out of my ass.
“What did you say?” one of them demands.
I speak very slowly. “I said, leave him alone you giant sack of dicks.”
The tall boy, he seems to be the leader of the group shakes his head. “You’re the new girl, right? This really doesn’t concern you.”
I cock my head to the side. “Maybe it’s not my business, but, call me crazy, I don’t get the warm fuzzies when I see three people ganging up on someone.”
The guy in black holds up his hands. “Hold up there, mighty mouse. You don’t even know us. We’re just chatting with our buddy, right?” He looks past me to the boy with his back against the locker. “Right?”
I turn, looking at him for the first time. His posture is stiff, but not scared. His face is stern. “It’s fine.”
I shrug. Hey, if he won’t stand up for himself, there’s not much I can do. “Fine,” I look back to the other guys, “but you guys are still jerks.”
The one in the middle chuckles, “I think you peaked with sack of dicks.”
I flip him off, because I’m pretty sure it’s the international symbol for go fuck yourself. Bending down, I retrieve the book they knocked away and hand it to locker boy who takes it without really looking at me, and I turn to walk away.
“Wait, new girl,” one of them calls after me. I pause, turning reluctantly. The tallest of them jogs up to me, “I heard your intro in class today. Funny stuff. Any other hobbies I should know about? Besides competitive name calling?”
He smiles crookedly and flips his shaggy blondish-brown hair out of his eyes.
He’s easily 6 inches taller than the boys around him, which puts him just above my eye level. I’ve been five foot ten since I turned fifteen and it used to bug me, but the guys are finally catching up and it’s nice to be able to look them in the eyes. Especially when they’re being misogynistic ass monkeys.
“I can kill a man with only a toothpick,” I retort, not smiling.
This guy's lopsided grin widens.
"A toothpick, huh? Sounds like quite a talent."
"It’s not so much a matter of skill as one of persistence," I say with a shrug.
He laughs and steps in front of me, halting my progress. I’m about to barrel through him—and hopefully plant him square on his butt—when he does the last thing I’m expecting. He sticks out his hand.
"I’m Oliver, king of the dick sacks. It’s nice to meet you, new girl."
I stare at his hand for a second like he’s joking. Was he really trying to make nice after all that? I’m not sure what prompts me to take it, but it seems impossible not to.
"I’m Farris. She who takes no shit."

Excerpt:
After hitting the travel/poetry/art aisle, I dumped my bag onto the ground before closing my eyes and stretching my arms out until my fingers could just brush the book spines on either side of me. This was my favourite way of choosing a book. Of course, if I didn’t like the one I chose, I could always put it back and try again.
Stepping forward, I tried to ignore Mrs. Patfield’s words and the rampant thudding of my heart, and concentrated on the way my fingers rose and fell from the fat spines onto the skinny ones, waiting for my gut to tell me which book I just had to read. Pausing for a moment, I caressed a long, thin cracked spine, but something made me ignore it and press forward. The right one was coming, I could feel it swirling in the pit of my belly.
After several more steps, my hand moved over something warm and my eyes shot open.
It was a hand, attached to the interesting guy with the fauxhawk, the artist’s wet dream. I’d have to stop calling him that. My cheeks burned and my pulse hammered as my eyes skimmed over his perfectly cut cheekbones and jaw, his mouth with the slightly fuller bottom lip, and those deep blue eyes of his that made me forget all about Mrs. Patfield for a second.
He looked at me, one eyebrow raised and a hint of amusement curving his lips.
I made a little yelping sound in the back of my throat and slid my hand away before shoving it behind my back, berating myself for having left my hand on his for longer than a reasonable second.
“Sorry,” I mumbled, stepping back, my hand still tingling. “I was just…looking for a book.”
The way he kept staring at me without saying a word made me hyper aware of the new pimple on my cheek, my chapped lips, and the frizzy-ness of my hair. So I did the only thing that came naturally to me. Book talk. The book in his hand was well worn, the cover faded.
“You’re into poetry?” I asked, trying to keep from staring at that brutal silvery scar of his and wondering if he’d filled out a bit or had finally bought some clothes that fit. I decided on the latter. The top he wore clung to his lean, wiry biceps, but the angles in his face appeared sharper and more chiselled, as though he’d gotten thinner.
He raised the book and gave it a little shake.
   “He’s my namesake.”
   My eyes skimmed the title.
“So, your name is…um…Lord?” As soon as the words escaped my lips, fresh heat prickled my cheeks. I hadn’t cracked a joke since forever and for some reason it made me feel vulnerable, like I was standing there without pants.
“Well, most people address me as Lord, but…” he drummed his fingers against the bookshelf and chewed on his full bottom lip as though he was thinking hard, “…I’ll let you call me Byron, because…” he shrugged his shoulders and looked at me from the corner of his eyes, the hint of a grin on his lips. “It’s not every day I get felt-up in a bookstore.”

The Gatherer Book Blitz!

THE GATHERER: A BRILLIANT DARKNESS STORY
 By A.G. Henley
Alev is proud to be a Fire Sister, one of a fierce group of women who live in a flaming mountain compound called the Cloister. The Sisters live without men, so Alev Gathers young girls to replenish their numbers. After she plucks young Kaiya from the remote village of Koolkuna, the girl’s father follows them into the wilderness. Alev keeps him at bay, but over time she suspects that this man, at least, isn’t the monster she was taught all men are.
When Kaiya's father manages to reach the Cloister, the Sisters want to put him to death. Alev can look the other way, or she can heed the growing whispers of her heart to help the girl and her father escape. But to defy the Fire Sisters is to revoke the only life and family Alev has ever known—and to face certain death herself.

THE GATHERER is an exciting 50-page prequel novella in the young adult fantasy Brilliant Darkness series. THE FIRE SISTERS (coming September 25th)

Excerpt:
Not long now, the child will come—the one I will Gather.
Crouched in the living embrace of a greenheart tree, one arm around the trunk for stability, I stare down at the water hole on which the girl's village relies, waiting for her. My hair, painted white, hangs stiffly down my back. My dress, made of fine leather and adorned with a single colorful feather threaded into the seam at my waist, pulls up my thigh, revealing the smooth muscles there.
I admire my body the way I would a well-made weapon. It is strong, efficient, deadly, tightened by years of daily training with staff and spear. My muscles, my mind, my blade—the tools I use to do what I must for my people, the Fire Sisters.
Nascent rays of sun sweep the treetops around me at a sharp angle. They strike the waterfall that feeds the pool, shattering it into a million shards of blue and white. A rolling ridge of hills cradles both the water hole and the girl’s village beyond, which I cannot see but know is there. My nostrils flare. The air is thick with the sharp tang of sap, the decay of the slick foliage around the water pool, the smoky hints of cooking fires starting up.
The trees in this remote part of the forest are crowded and close. Bursting with leaves at full summer, they are simple to move through without being detected. Over the last few days I have crept among them, around the village called Koolkuna, observing the people, cataloging their daughters.
They live well. They have more food than others I've seen, and they seem peaceable, with well-maintained homes and enough families to spread out their work. If it weren't for the presence of men, it might be perfect.
This group must have few enemies, and they do not seem to fear the wailers. There are no walls or other protective barriers against the rabid flesh-eating creatures. No adults accompany the children who collect water in the early mornings. How they are not consumed when the wailers come, I do not know. Do they have some unknown power or protection? I must be cautious.
My body stills as the girl meanders into the clearing from the path to the village, swinging her bucket. I think she sings to herself; it is hard to know for sure over the crushing noise of the waterfall.
I look her over one last time. She is the right age: not very young, but not yet old enough to be entirely set in her people's ways. She seems healthy, and she is built sturdily, the way the Teachers like our girls to be. I chose her for all of these qualities, but also because she has a boldness in her posture and movements that promises physical prowess and athleticism.
She kneels at the edge of the water hole, back to me, filling the bucket. Her black hair, cut shorter than some of the other girls her age, sticks out in sleepy tufts from her head.
Quietly, I inch down the trunk of the tree, landing softly on the ground. I am ready, but I listen and watch a little longer. I am here by myself. If her people catch me, my life will be forfeit.
The girl is alone. Vulnerable. It is time.
I dip the point of my knife into the small sack of jewel wasp venom at my waist, and run toward her.
